Flawless with Flavius

The Idris House is situated at a bustling intersection in Christchurch, New Zealand. Due to this location, the architects were tasked with managing traffic noise and preserving privacy, all while optimizing sunlight exposure and improving the connection to outdoor spaces to enhance the residents' lifestyle.

An hidden oasis in New Zealand

The true character of the building is only unveiled once you have been invited inside. From there it manifests as a hidden oasis – a secluded courtyard that embodies a dynamic interplay between exterior and interior spaces.

Viewed from the street, the structure presents a visual barrier through the interplay of a brick fence wall and the house itself.

Inviting Interior

Once you have stepped inside, expansive glass openings and the spacious layout give the perception of the interior seamlessly extending into the garden. This way, the main structure is perfectly integrated in the outside area. The resulting design creates intimacy for the homeowners, avoiding any unwanted gaze into their daily life, through a sober and simple design language that aims to create a calm and timeless piece of architecture.

This is emphasized by the material choice of an earthy brick, the Terca Imperium Flavius, which is partly chipped to enhance the natural feeling of an aged wall, to measure the passing time through the growing plants.

A perfect fit

Once the lush garden is planted, the contrast of these brick walls against the abundant green all around it is celebrated and emphasized, just as all the other contrasts this house has to offer: close against open, heavy against light, giving a special sense of dynamics to the modern architecture. The Terca Imperium Flavius fits perfectly into the architecture of the house and ensures optimal separation from the public space.

The façades are reinforced by the structure and texture of the brick and create a warm, natural atmosphere. The client was very specific about his wishes for the home. With great attention to detail, the bricklayer spent many hours testing and perfecting the shade of mortar to be used with the brick. Being a dominant material in the building, the mortar was a critical component. The entire house and garden walls were clad in brick.
