Celebrating 40 issues of inspiring brick-architecture

Architecture is not supposed to be about walls, doors and windows. They are just means to an end. Great architecture is about people and improving their lives. Because what makes architecture unique as an artform is the blend of creativity, the selection of materials and craftsmanship. Architects are artists, but they are also suppliers of a basic human need: spaces where we can feel at home, buildings that allow us to live and work in comfort and health.

This magazine was founded to acknowledge this double role of architects and to highlight their achievements when it comes to the use of bricks. Today, we proudly celebrate its 40th issue.

A true testament for outstanding brick-architecture

Over the years, we have curated outstanding examples of brick architecture that inspire us, in order to inspire you too. To that end, we have chosen buildings that truly combine art and craft, as they fulfill the highest aesthetics standards while also allowing for full wellbeing. Some time ago we have included sustainability among our criteria of excellence, as architects embrace their unique chance to ensure the quality of life not only of current but also of future generations.

For this special edition, we have gathered 15 projects from 14 countries, a true testament to the fact that outstanding brick-architecture can be found anywhere. In the Czech Republic, an elliptic Kindergarten holds a beautiful atrium with three cherry trees for the children to play, symbolizing the paradise garden of childhood. In Finland, a hospital treating psychiatric patients creates a home-like atmosphere through plants and warm bricks to activate the healing effects of such an environment. And in Denmark, an old Christian mission house was repurposed to hold 11 modern homes. The project’s fitting name: “Bethlehem”.

„Architects are artists, but they are also suppliers of a basic human need: spaces where we can feel at home, buildings that allow us to live and work in comfort and health.” - Heimo Scheuch, CEO wienerberger
